“The Price of Science Without Moral Constraints: German and American Medicine Before DNA and Today,”May 2005
Presented at the annual Humboldt University Faculty of Theology symposium on Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A German theologian and pastor, Bonhoeffer was one of the first voices of resistance to Hitler. He actively participated in the German resistance movement against the Nazi party and was involved in a plot to assassinate Hitler. He was ultimately arrested and was executed by hanging at the Flossenburg concentration camp two weeks before liberation. In this lecture, Pollack emphasizes the importance of “taking a stand in public against egregious misinterpretations of the results of science” and “acknowledging that truth aloud, while there is still time and freedom to do so.”
